Ephedra Dangers
The New England Journal of Medicine published the effects of ephedra
on the body in the December 21, 2000 publication. The researchers
noted the effect that even a small amount of ephedra can have on
a persons body. The researchers considered 25 mgs to be the
recommended therapeutic dose that is usually given with around 200
mgs of caffeine. What the researchers found was that one dose of
the ephedra produced a quickened heart rate, opened up the bronchial
airways, which allowed more oxygen to be available, and the blood
vessels constricted that resulted in an increased blood pressure.
Different people respond to ephedra more or less dangerously than
others do. Some ephedra users have died taking the supplement or
experienced dangerous conditions like stroke or heart attack. Other
ephedra dangers can include hypertension, arrhythmia, or palpitations.
Included in the 14,700 reports that Metabolife turned over to the
FDA in August 2002 was instances of health problems ranging from
strokes, heart attacks, and seizures, in addition to various other
effects.
During the federal case that penalized Metabolife another $4.1
million for four personal injuries for Metabolife users that had
suffered strokes or heart attacks, Metabolife provided yet another
1,480 customer complaints that they claimed was missed due to a
computer glitch. These additional reports provided on November 19,
2002 of Metabolife side effects included three deaths, 20 heart
attacks, and 24 strokes. Again, Metabolife stated these records
do not indicate ephedra dangers.
The FDA has been collecting and receiving reports of adverse events
with ephedra since 1994, and in a September 1994 FDA Medical Bulletin,
the agency reported the number was increasing. The reported reactions
varied from mild side effects to very serious conditions including:
- nervousness
- dizziness
- tremor
- alternations in blood pressure or heart rate
- headache
- gastrointestinal distress
- chest pain
- myocardial infarction
- hepatitis
- stroke
- seizures
- pyschosis
- death
Since 1994, the FDA has collected reports of over 100 deaths among
ephedra users such as Metabolife. A report from the Centers for
Disease Control on August 16, 1996, reported that the Bureau of
Food and Drug safety, Texas Department of Health, received around
500 reports of adverse events in persons that consumed dietary supplement
products containing ephedrine. The reports included patients that
followed the recommended dosage.
