Ephedra Products
Ephedra is a highly popular stimulant found in dietary supplements
and sports drinks. The federal government is now deciding whether
or not to impose tougher restrictions on ephedra products, including
the possibility of an ephedra ban. Various groups have been pushing
for years for the ban or at least stricter regulation on ephedra
products. Ephedra dangers include death, heart attacks, strokes,
seizures, and many other adverse effects. Many consumers do not
understand the risks and benefits of all-natural products
and equate all-natural as being completely safe.

Mayo
Clinic Publishes Ephedra Reports
Metabolife International still maintains their ephedra-containing
product is safe despite the over one hundred personal injury cases
against Metabolife. So far, the company has paid around $5 million
to settle 29 cases. In January 2002, the Mayo Clinic Proceedings
published a review of reports that were made between 1995 and 1997
regarding ephedra side effects. Metabolife continues to insist that
the ephedra product is safe when it is used as directed, however
the Mayo Clinic findings reported differently. Even at recommended
doses, when people were using ephedra there were 11 sudden deaths,
16 strokes, and 10 heart attacks. For more information on ephedra

Consumer
Advocacy Group Petitions For the Ban of Ephedra
The Public Citizen consumer advocacy group actively works to remove
dangerous products from the market, including ephedra. The group
has been pressuring government to ban the sale of ephedra for years
now, issuing a petition to the FDA September 2001. Prior to the
announcement of the criminal investigation on Metabolife, the group
wrote a letter to the Department of Health and Human Services
Secretary Thompson to urge him to direct the FDA to open a criminal
investigation of Metabolife. The group is still not satisfied with
the continued availability of ephedra on the market and the government
is now facing decisions of whether or not ephedra will become a
banned substance or more closely regulated in light of the Metabolife
legal battles.
Ephedra Banned
Ephedra dangers have been debated for years now, finally leading
to the supplement being viewed as an unnecessary health risk and
is now banned by organizations and foreign countries.
